Firefox 148 - “AI Kill Switch” for Users
🦊 Firefox 148 : “AI Kill Switch” for Users
On February 24, 2026, Mozilla officially released Firefox 148, introducing a highly anticipated feature: a global control that allows users to disable all AI features in the browser.
🔧 A New “AI Controls” Section
Starting with version 148, Firefox includes a dedicated “AI Controls” panel in its settings.
Users can enable a main option called “Block AI enhancements,” which disables all current and future generative AI features.
This button acts as a global switch: any new AI features added in future updates will automatically remain disabled.
🤖 Which Features Are Affected?
When the main option is enabled, Firefox disables features such as:
- Chatbots integrated into the sidebar
- AI-powered link previews
- Smart tab grouping suggestions
- Automatic translations
- AI-generated alt text in PDFs
💡 Complete Disabling or Granular Control?
Firefox 148 does not take an “all-or-nothing” approach.
Users can also individually enable or disable each AI feature via dedicated menus within the same settings panel.
This allows, for example, keeping automatic translation enabled while blocking chatbots.
🔐 A Privacy-First Approach
Unlike some competitors that deeply integrate AI by default, Mozilla positions AI as optional rather than mandatory. The update reinforces Firefox’s long-standing emphasis on user choice, privacy, and transparency.
